We hosted the first in a new series of sessions on menstrual health and sport, helping pupils build confidence, empathy and understanding.
This week, we were proud to partner with the Paul Canoville Foundation to deliver an important set of sessions focused on understanding the menstrual cycle and its impact on participation in sport.
As the first in a new series of lectures, the event began with a session for girls exploring how the menstrual cycle can influence physical activity, along with practical strategies to help them feel confident and supported when taking part in sport. A second session was then delivered to boys, helping them understand the changes their peers experience and how they can be supportive and respectful.
Thanks to our partnership with the Paul Canoville Foundation, this initiative aims to empower girls, educate boys, and challenge outdated attitudes, fostering a school culture built on empathy, respect and inclusion. To extend its impact, other schools joined the session virtually, and a recording has been made available for the Foundation’s wider network of education partners.
James Hamilton, Director of Sport, said:
“Hartshill Academy has taken a positive step towards breaking down barriers in sport by hosting two pioneering sessions focused on menstruation and its impact on physical activity. These sessions mark the beginning of a wider programme to promote inclusivity, understanding and respect in sport across the academy and beyond.”
Lorraine Taylor, Principal at Hartshill Academy, added:
“We are proud to have hosted the first live assembly in partnership with the Paul Canoville Foundation. Today’s sessions gave our Year 7 and 8 pupils the chance to explore the science behind the menstrual cycle, challenge myths and build empathy and understanding.
This event truly reflected the Foundation’s values of allyship, belonging and community. Together, we empowered young women and fostered supportive allies, creating a stronger, more inclusive school community. We would like to thank Georgie Day and the Paul Canoville Foundation for providing this important opportunity for our pupils.”
We look forward to hosting further lectures in this series as we continue to promote inclusivity, confidence and equality in sport at Hartshill Academy.
