Bullying

At Hartshill Academy we proactively promote kindness, gratitude and our HART values of Heart, Ambition, Respect and Tenacity. We have a zero-tolerance approach to bullying and take all allegations of bullying seriously. We believe that pupils have a right to learn in a supportive, caring, safe environment in which they can succeed.

To ensure this we have a range of support in place, outlined below, and educate pupils through our comprehensive HART program of Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and assemblies. These sessions cover key themes including the importance of being kind, diversity, individuality, staying safe online and the consequences bullying.

We urge you and your child to report any concern you have, so we can work with you to resolve this. Your child is able to report their concerns to any member of staff within the school. For parents/carers please report your concerns to your child’s Pastoral Leader by contacting the school reception.

We have pupil House Captains who pupils can talk to about issues and are also relaunching anti bullying ambassadors and anti-bullying boxes, which pupils can post their concerns in.

We act quickly to resolve any situation which is brought to our attention and are committed to working together with pupils, parents and the wider community to ensure any incidence of bullying, online or in person is robustly tackled and challenged. Please do contact us if you have any concerns or need any help.

Types of Bullying

Name Calling

Persistent name-calling directed at the same individual(s), which hurts, insults or humiliates.

Physical Aggression

This behaviour includes pushing, shoving, punching, kicking, poking and tripping people. It may also take the form of severe physical assault. Personal property can be the focus of attention for the bully.

Extortion

Demands for money may be made, often accompanied by threats (sometimes carried out in the event of the targeted pupil not delivering on the demand). A pupil may also be forced into theft of property for delivery to another who is engaged in bullying behaviour. Intimidation: some bullying behaviour takes the form of intimidation; it may be based on the use of very aggressive language including body language.

Inclusion, Exclusion or other relational bullying

This occurs where a certain person is deliberately isolated, excluded or ignored by some or the entire class group; relational bullying occurs when a person’s attempts to socialise and form relationships with peers are repeatedly rejected or undermined.

Cyber bullying

This type of bullying is increasingly common and is continuously evolving. It is bullying carried out through the use of information and communication technologies such as text, social network sites, e-mail, instant messaging (IM), apps, gaming sites, chat-rooms and other online technology.
