Introducation of the Health & Social Care Curriculum

BTEC Level 1/2 Tech Award in Health & Social Care

The main principles for the Health and Social Care curriculum at Hartshill academy is to inspire young people to work within services that support a wide range of people.

The Health and Social Care curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • are aware of the job roles and responsibilities undertaken by a range of professionals
  • aim to actively pursue a healthy lifestyle with an understanding of why this is important
  • have the knowledge to access Level 3 or Higher Education courses in in Health and Social Care

The two-year Health and Social Care curriculum at Hartshill Academy ensure that pupils can develop a broad understanding of the human lifespan development, care services and values and social influences on health and wellbeing. In every lesson all pupils are immersed in knowledge and repeatedly encounter rigorous health and social care questions that are underpinned by the current guidelines within health and social care.

Intent

Pupils will cultivate a key understanding of the crucial role that Health and Social Care has on the UK economy and how the key events of the last decade can be used as evidence for this. Pupils will take on a range of vocational roles and scenarios from the Health and Social care sector and use their own personal skills and the knowledge learnt to evidence understanding in assignments on a range of Health and Social care topics being studied.

The nature of the Health and Social Care curriculum ensures that the pupils leave the classroom with a sense of identity for their place in the world. They are challenged to different points of view, breaking down misconceptions that they have about different groups in society. Pupils will therefore become more respectful individuals and understand what barriers minority groups have faced in the past and what they will continue to face unless we break them down.

Pupils will also look at broader themes from the national Health and Social Care sector, these will be examined externally during the course as well as underpinning all assignment work. By the end of the course, pupils will have a good understanding of the Health and Social Care sector enabling access to a Level 3 course, apprenticeship, or employment.

Enjoyment and enthusiasm are at the forefront of our curriculum, with a broad yet balanced range of units covered. The units covered also aim to develop the knowledge of the wider world and where and when medicines or health-based practices have originated from, promoting cultural capital. British values are shown throughout Health and Social Care lessons from the rule of law, the culture of the NHS compared to other countries and the mutual respect shown between the health and social care professional and the person accessing the care.

The Health and Social Care area leads to many different career pathways. Within the curriculum, units are taught to help student’s gage further understanding on career routes and progressions within a multitude of sporting careers as well as allow them to undertake time working within a Health and Social Care setting if they wish

Pupils are assessed via coursework and one exam for Health and Social Care. We have numerous points for pupils to recall information with the implementation of do now’s every lesson. For those pupils that do take Health and Social Care as an options subject, the knowledge and skills that are then learnt in a theory setting can be built further upon.
